Beyond Scotland?
The phenomenon of men wearing kilts is nothing new. Scotsmen have been wearing them for centuries albeit not so common these days. However, there seems to be a new interest in kilts. Jean Paul Gaultier did a line of kilts many seasons ago (to be worn over long trousers) and David Beckham, who is arguably one of the most fashion-forward football players were seen wearing a sarong-type thing (not really a kilt though) a few years ago.
The modern take on the kilt seems to have given it a rather grungy/punkish look as exemplified by the kilts made by Guilty Kilts.
Across the Atlantic, Utilikilts seem to have gone for a more mainstream look and are marketing them as a serious alternative to trousers, even to the extent that suggesting trousers are a form of male oppression.
Whatever the reason, I'm not exactly averse to wearing a kilt myself - not the traditional Scottish sort as it would look completely wrong on me as I clearly have no Scottish heritage whatsoever but perhaps one of the contemporary ones from Guilty Kilts or Utilikilts.
If I ever get myself a kilt, no doubt photographs of me wearing it will appear in this blog in due course.
